India’s PV Sindhu lifted the Japan Open badminton title in Tokyo, winning the Super 750 tournament with a composed run through the women’s singles draw.

In the semi-final, the world No.10 faced China’s Chen Yufei, ranked No.4 and a Tokyo Olympics gold medallist. Sindhu took the opening game 21-19 and was leading 15-10 in the second when Chen retired due to injury, sending the Indian shuttler into the final.

Sindhu then met Japan’s world No.3 Akane Yamaguchi in the title clash. Playing with control from the start, she won 21-17, 21-17 to seal the championship.

The victory is a significant milestone for the two-time Olympic medallist, who had not won an international title for the past two years before this triumph.
