Islamabad: The United Nations human rights office has expressed deep concern over continuing violence and a tense situation in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Protests have been ongoing since last month, driven by issues including legislative reservation for refugees and rising prices. The unrest has reportedly led to multiple deaths.

With the region’s legislative assembly election scheduled for the 27th, the atmosphere has become more strained. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk urged all sides to work towards restoring peace.

Türk also called for prompt, thorough and impartial investigations into every death linked to the violence. He further criticised the suspension of internet services as a measure to control tensions in the area.
