A surprise inspection by Chief Minister Vijay at the M.C. Raja Social Justice Students’ Hostel in Saidapet, Chennai, has led to immediate changes in food supply and hostel rules.

The hostel, run under the Adi Dravidar Welfare Department and built at a cost of Rs 44.50 crore, had faced repeated complaints from students about lack of basic facilities and poor-quality meals. Students told the Chief Minister that food often contained worms and insects and was served in substandard condition.

They also alleged that students returning late due to night work or competitive exam preparation were denied meals, and that entry was refused after a fixed time. The Chief Minister questioned the hostel warden and said action would be taken on the complaints.

Officials said regular items such as idli, dosa and chapati—stopped for months due to a cooking gas cylinder shortage—are now being served again. Hostel entry has been relaxed up to 12:00 midnight, and steps are being taken to purchase competitive exam books for the hostel library.
