New Delhi witnessed heightened security and tension after activists of the ‘Cockroach Janata Party’ (CJP) attempted to march towards Parliament demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the alleged NEET question paper leak.
According to the report, social activist Sonam Wangchuk, who had been on a 21-day hunger strike at Jantar Mantar backing the demand, was forcibly admitted to a hospital by police. A call was then made for a rally to “gherao” Parliament.
Delhi Police said no permission had been granted for any procession and that prohibitory orders under Section 144 were in force, warning of strict action for violations. Police and security personnel were deployed in advance, and barricades were placed around the Jantar Mantar area.
Despite the restrictions, thousands gathered and tried to move past the barricades. Police used mild baton-charge measures, detained some protesters, and later fired tear gas when the group attempted to proceed towards Parliament during the monsoon session.
As a precaution, additional police were deployed, entry gates near Parliament were closed, and five Metro stations were shut. The report also said some police personnel were injured and admitted to hospital.
