DMK president M.K. Stalin on Monday condemned the arrest of Vilathikulam MLA Markandeyan, alleging that the ruling administration is acting against democratic norms and targeting political criticism.
In a statement, Stalin said DMK former ministers, MLAs and online supporters who point out “mistakes and failures” of the government are being repeatedly pursued. He also claimed that even in defamation-related cases, unrelated sections are being added, and noted that courts had recently questioned such practices.
Stalin further alleged that the arrested MLA was not allowed to meet his lawyer and supporters, and that those who attempted to deliver medicines were stopped. He said the incident amounted to denial of basic legal and human rights.
Questioning whether the state was witnessing “rule of law” or otherwise, Stalin accused the government of acting swiftly against critics while failing to act in other matters. He urged the police to act according to law and conscience, and not to carry out unlawful orders, warning of consequences if they did not.
