Chennai: Chief Minister Vijay said Tamil Nadu is setting a record by producing the highest number of young chess grandmasters in India.
In a statement issued on the occasion of World Chess Day, he extended greetings to chess players, women players and coaches who love the sport. He noted that the state’s growing list of young grandmasters is bringing recognition to Tamil Nadu on the international stage.
Recalling that Viswanathan Anand became India’s first grandmaster in 1988, the Chief Minister cited young grandmasters such as Gukesh, Praggnanandhaa and Vaishali for their achievements in global tournaments. He conveyed his best wishes to them on the day.
With Tamil Nadu progressing as a “capital of chess” on the world stage, he urged the younger generation to learn chess techniques, participate in international competitions and bring pride to both Tamil Nadu and India. He said the state government would stand by such efforts and provide all necessary support.
