Initial discussions are under way to shift Chief Minister Vijay’s office within the Tamil Nadu Secretariat complex in Chennai, sources said. The proposal is to move the CM’s office from the heritage Fort St George building to the Namakkal Kaviar Maligai.
Fort St George currently houses the Chief Minister’s office, ministers’ offices, the Assembly hall, the Chief Secretary’s office and several department secretariats, along with the Chief Electoral Officer’s office. In the 10-storey Namakkal Kaviar Maligai within the same campus, offices of secretaries from multiple departments are functioning.
With senior officials, public figures, business representatives, and foreign mission officials visiting the Chief Minister regularly—along with leaders of alliance parties—sources say the present CM office faces space constraints, causing inconvenience to visitors.
As part of the plan, the entire 10th floor of Namakkal Kaviar Maligai is being considered for conversion into the Chief Minister’s office. A seminar hall and a dining area currently located there may be shifted elsewhere.
While space is cited as the reason, there are also claims that an astrologer advised that the current room is not in line with vastu and that operating from a higher floor would be favourable. However, officials said no formal government order has been issued so far.
