Thoothukudi district police on Monday arrested DMK MLA Markandeyan, following controversy over remarks he made at a party public meeting in Kovilpatti on July 18.
According to the complaint, the Vilathikulam legislator allegedly issued an open threat against Chief Minister Vijay during his speech, triggering sharp reactions. TVK functionaries submitted petitions at police stations and the district SP office seeking action.
The district crime branch registered a case against the MLA under three sections. A police team led by Crime Branch Inspector Janaki visited his residence in Ammal Nagar, Vilathikulam, around 6 am and served a summons detailing the case.
Police said Markandeyan objected, stating he could not be taken for inquiry without the Speaker’s permission. An argument reportedly broke out between police and his supporters, after which he was arrested and taken away in a jeep; DMK workers attempted to stop the vehicle.
As news spread that he was taken to the district SP office, DMK leaders and cadres gathered there and sought permission to meet him, which police denied. Later, former ministers and MLAs led a larger group in protest, and DMK workers also staged a road blockade near the Collectorate; police detained them at a private marriage hall, the report said.
