Chennai: Minister Vignesh on Tuesday said discussions were held within the government on how to reform TASMAC, amid concerns about the condition of liquor retail outlets.
In an interview, he said that even now, visiting TASMAC shops shows unhygienic surroundings, with garbage and people lying around, adding that such conditions cannot be ignored and the sector needs to be corrected and streamlined.
He said the government initiated efforts to address the issue and, during internal deliberations, multiple suggestions were raised. These included introducing “resto bar” facilities, moving towards privatization, changing TASMAC’s overall structure, and even removing TASMAC altogether.
The minister alleged that from the internal discussion, only the “resto bar” idea was selectively leaked outside, which then became the main topic of public debate.
