A wireman attached to the Tenkasi electricity board office was arrested after he was allegedly caught accepting a bribe of Rs 2,000 for providing a new power connection.
According to the complaint, Shanmugasundaram (37), a wiring contractor from Punnaiyapuram in Tenkasi district, had applied for an electricity connection for Nagarajan’s newly built house at Mettu Street, Tenkasi. After paying online charges of Rs 13,725 and Rs 27,660, related works including installation of an electric pole were completed.
When it came to fixing the electricity meter, the wireman, Arumugachamy (53), allegedly demanded Rs 2,000 and told the applicant that the connection would be given only if the money was paid.
Shanmugasundaram approached the Tenkasi unit of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC). Acting on the complaint, officials registered a case and arranged a trap by providing the complainant with chemically treated currency.
As planned, when Arumugachamy received the money, DVAC officers who were lying in wait apprehended him red-handed and placed him under arrest.
