Former BJP leader Annamalai’s newly launched organisation, ‘We The Leaders’, is facing operational hurdles as office-bearers have not been appointed to coordinate activities, according to members of the group.
Members said Annamalai had directed the organisation to conduct anti-drug awareness programmes. Across Tamil Nadu, volunteers organised marathons, rallies and other outreach events in different locations, but the absence of coordinators meant these efforts did not gain wider public attention.
They also pointed to a membership target of 5 crore set by Annamalai. On June 5, the day he issued the call, 12 lakh people reportedly joined in a single day. After that, enrolments slowed, with many in urban areas who already knew him having signed up early.
Members said expanding into rural areas has been difficult due to the lack of grassroots-level functionaries. They argued that appointing office-bearers at the state, district, city and union levels is necessary to organise membership drives and run programmes effectively.
Some members also said the delay in launching a political party and the perception that Annamalai is avoiding aggressive politics have led to disappointment among those who joined. They urged him to appoint administrators and take decisive steps to sustain momentum.
