A court in Thoothukudi has dismissed the bail petition filed by DMK MLA Markandeyan, who is currently in judicial custody in connection with a case alleging that he issued threats against Chief Minister Vijay.
The case stems from a DMK public meeting held in Kovilpatti, where Markandeyan, the MLA from Vilathikulam constituency, allegedly made a public remark threatening to “break the Chief Minister Vijay’s bones,” triggering controversy.
Following the speech, functionaries of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) submitted complaints at police stations and at the office of the district Superintendent of Police, seeking action against the MLA. The district crime branch registered a case under three sections and arrested him on July 20, after which he was remanded to judicial custody and lodged in Palayamkottai prison.
Markandeyan later moved the Thoothukudi criminal court seeking bail, while the police filed a separate petition seeking permission to take him into custody for interrogation. After hearing both petitions, Judge Sumathi rejected the bail plea and also dismissed the police request for custodial interrogation.
