The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Monday deferred the hearing on an anticipatory bail petition filed by Vellathurai in connection with an alleged land registration fraud involving the Palani Dhandapani Swamy Mutt in Dindigul district.
The CB-CID has registered a case alleging that 1.35 acres belonging to the mutt was fraudulently registered using forged documents. The FIR names sub-registrar Justin Manikandan Subramaniyan, Vellathurai of Papankulam in Tiruppur district, and others.
The court has earlier granted interim anticipatory bail to Justin Manikandan Subramaniyan. In his petition, Vellathurai said he had challenged the sub-registrar’s refusal to register the document, and that a single judge had set aside that refusal.
He further stated that no civil case was pending over the land, and that a division bench later cancelled the registration. Claiming he had paid Rs 1 crore for the purchase and suffered a loss, he sought anticipatory bail.
Justice K. Rajasekar heard the matter. As the petitioner’s counsel sought time for a senior advocate to appear and argue, the court adjourned the hearing to July 22.
