Gangtok: A tunnel under construction for a hydropower project in Sikkim collapsed following a landslide, leaving 10 people dead, officials said.
The incident occurred at Samarthdung in Jolongay, Namchi district, where a tunnel is being built for the project. Around 25 people, including project officials and workers, were on duty when the collapse took place.
The area has been receiving heavy rain for the past few days, disrupting normal life. After the collapse, rescue teams rushed to the spot and launched search operations in multiple phases.
Rescuers later recovered 10 bodies from the debris. Seven of the deceased have been identified, while three bodies, described as severely damaged, were taken to a hospital for further procedures.
Rescue work remains challenging as methane gas has reportedly accumulated for about 1.5 km inside the tunnel. Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang expressed condolences to the families and said the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister had sought details and assured all necessary assistance.
