Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) police arrested a Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) wireman in Tenkasi district for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 2,000 to provide a domestic power connection.
According to officials, Shanmugasundaram (37) of Punnaiyapuram, a wiring contractor, had applied for a new electricity connection for a house in Mettutheru, Tenkasi. He had paid the required charges online—Rs 13,725 and Rs 27,660—and the related works, including installation of an electric pole, were completed.
When it came to fixing the electricity meter, the wireman, Arumugachamy (53), allegedly demanded Rs 2,000 and told the applicant that the connection would be given only after payment. Shanmugasundaram lodged a complaint with the DVAC.
A trap was laid under the leadership of DSP Paul Sudhar. The complainant was given chemically treated currency, and the wireman was caught red-handed while receiving the money, police said.
In a separate case in Puducherry, Vigilance police registered a case against Villianur police station Assistant Sub-Inspector Stalin and constable Kannarasu for allegedly demanding Rs 1,000 to hand over land documents to Akash (23) of Ariyankuppam. Police said an inquiry is under way under the supervision of senior officers.
