A controversy has erupted in Tamil Nadu after Vilathikulam DMK MLA Markandeyan was arrested for making a public remark that he would “break” Chief Minister Vijay’s spine.
Following the arrest, DMK president M.K. Stalin and MP Kanimozhi criticised the police action. The episode has sparked a wider debate on political speech, civility and accountability.
Residents in Coimbatore offered sharply differing views. Several said threatening language against an elected Chief Minister is unacceptable and argued that legal action was justified, urging DMK leaders to condemn their party member’s remarks instead of focusing only on the arrest.
Others pointed to constitutional free speech and said criticism of a government should not lead to arrest, while still stressing that public figures must avoid hate-filled or violent rhetoric. Many respondents called for more restraint and political decorum across parties.
