Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s film ‘Jananayagan’ hit screens on Thursday, with early-morning shows beginning at 6 am in neighbouring states such as Kerala. With special shows not permitted in Tamil Nadu, many fans reportedly headed to theatres near the Tamil Nadu–Kerala and Tamil Nadu–Karnataka borders to catch the first screenings.
The film, described as Vijay’s last movie, was originally expected to release before he entered the Tamil Nadu Assembly election. However, the release was delayed due to issues in obtaining the censor certificate, the report said.
Now, the movie has arrived 75 days after Vijay assumed office as Chief Minister. It is releasing on a large scale—around 1,000 screens in Tamil Nadu, 3,000 across India, and over 5,000 worldwide.
In Tamil Nadu, the first shows are scheduled for 9 am, while special early shows have already played in Kerala and Karnataka. Fans travelled to places such as Palakkad and celebrated the release in a festival-like manner.
The report also noted that the film’s title card carries a reference to “Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu” alongside Vijay’s name, and includes a scene featuring a gesture said to mock the DMK in the Assembly, which fans have been cheering. Supporters are also expressing hopes that the film could reach Rs 1,000 crore in collections.
