Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee has been suspended from the Lok Sabha for the remainder of the monsoon session following a complaint that he made derogatory remarks against women MPs.
The monsoon session began on July 20 and is scheduled to run until August 13. Proceedings in both Houses were disrupted in the first two days amid protests over issues including the NEET question paper leak and a demonstration in Delhi.
On the third day, opposition MPs again raised multiple issues, leading to repeated disruptions and an adjournment of the Lok Sabha till 2 pm. During this period, Banerjee is alleged to have spoken in an insulting manner to women MPs, including Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar and Mithali Bag, who had recently moved from the TMC to the Bharatiya Janata Party.
The women MPs submitted a complaint to Speaker Om Birla, stating that the remarks undermined the dignity of the House. When the Lok Sabha reconvened, presiding officer Krishna Prasad Tenneti urged that a motion be taken up on the complaint.
Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal moved the suspension motion, which was passed by voice vote amid continued sloganeering by opposition members. Banerjee was then directed to leave the Lok Sabha for the rest of the session.
