Chennai: Tamil Nadu Law Minister Nirmal Kumar on Tuesday said the state government will give priority to steps aimed at expanding courts across the state to reduce the backlog of cases.
He was speaking at a reception organised by the Madras Bar Association, one of the oldest associations linked to the Madras High Court. Association president V.R. Kamalanathan welcomed the minister at the event.
Nirmal Kumar said there are challenges in the law department and court administration, and that measures are being taken to address them. He added that the government is committed to ensuring professional security for advocates.
Referring to Chief Minister Vijay’s instructions, the minister said courts should be expanded as much as possible. He noted that priority would be given to expansion based on a benchmark of one court for every 200 cases, which he said would help bring down pendency.
The event was attended by Advocate General Vijayanarayan, Government Chief Criminal Prosecutor John Sathyan, Bar Association secretary Pothiraj, and others. After the programme, the minister visited the journalists’ room in the Madras High Court परिसर and heard their grievances.
