A Chennai court on Wednesday sentenced actor-producer Vimal to one year in prison in connection with a cheque bounce case.

According to the complaint, Vimal had borrowed Rs 4.5 crore from a person named Gopi to finance the film Mannar Vagaiyara, which released about five years ago. To repay the amount, Vimal issued a cheque.

The cheque was returned by the bank due to insufficient funds, the complainant said. Even after that, the repayment was not made, following which Gopi filed a case alleging cheque fraud.

Vimal had earlier appeared before the court during the trial and was questioned. Delivering the verdict, Judge Aarthi said the charges were proved and ordered a one-year jail term, while granting time for Vimal to file an appeal.
