Dr Amish Shah, an Indian-origin physician, has won the Democratic Party’s internal election to become its candidate for Arizona’s MP seat in the United States.
The primary was held ahead of the November parliamentary election. Despite senior party leaders backing another contender, Shah secured a decisive victory in a closely watched contest.
Shah, 48, traces his roots to Gujarat in India. He will now represent the Democrats in the general election.
In November, Shah is set to face Jay Peely, a former football player who has the support of former US President Donald Trump and is contesting on the Republican ticket.
