Chennai: The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department has issued fresh guidelines for installing and consecrating new flagpoles (kodimaram) in temples under its control.

According to the directions, any new flagpole installation or consecration will require prior approval from the HR&CE Commissioner. Applications seeking permission must be submitted at least 15 days before the proposed consecration.

The department said proposals should be forwarded with a resolution from the concerned temple’s executive officer, trustee and board of trustees. The consecration must be conducted in compliance with statutory provisions and Agama norms.

If a donor provides the new flagpole, the donor’s consent letter must be attached to the application. After the flagpole is consecrated, separate departmental permission will be required to fix protective coverings made of copper, brass, gold, gold-plated or gold-coated materials.
