Educationist and social activist Sonam Wangchuk on Wednesday ended his 26-day hunger strike in New Delhi, which he had launched seeking strong action on education reforms and the NEET question paper leak issue.
Union ministers J.P. Nadda and Jitendra Singh met Wangchuk in person and conveyed assurances on behalf of the Central government. Following this, Wangchuk accepted the assurance and broke his fast by drinking fruit juice offered by the ministers.
Wangchuk had begun the protest at Jantar Mantar towards the end of last month, pressing for greater transparency in the education system and accountability for examination irregularities.
During the course of the protest, he reportedly suffered a health setback and was admitted to hospital for treatment. After the ministers assured that his demands would be discussed in Parliament and at the government level, he agreed to withdraw the protest.
Wangchuk’s wife, Geetanjali Angmo, and supporters were present at the time he ended the fast.
