Washington: US President Donald Trump has said that compensation for damage to ships and cargo amid escalating tensions in West Asia will be paid using Iranian funds held under American control.
The statement comes as the region faces heightened conflict after a peace agreement reportedly collapsed. The report says the US has continued attacks on Iran, while Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz and has been attacking vessels passing through the strategic waterway.
Trump had earlier warned that if attacks on ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz continued, the US would respond by bombing Iranian nuclear facilities or bridges. Despite that warning, incidents involving attacks on ships have continued, according to the report.
In a post, Trump said that until further notice, all damage to ships, cargo, or anything related would be paid from Iranian money in the possession and control of the United States. He added that the compensation could be substantial but described it as fair.
Trump did not clarify which specific incidents would be eligible for compensation from Iranian assets under US control.
