Hosur: A State Tax Officer attached to the Commercial Taxes Department was arrested in Hosur for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh from an industrialist.

According to the complaint, Nambi (75), a resident of Mookandapalli MM Nagar in Hosur who runs a factory at Durga Nagar, Jujuvadi, had applied to receive a GST refund of Rs 10 lakh due to his firm.

The officer, Kalaiarasan (48), posted at the Commercial Taxes office on Seetharam Road, allegedly demanded 20% of the refund amount as a bribe to process the application. After Nambi said he could not pay that much, the demand was reportedly reduced to 10%.

Unwilling to pay, Nambi approached the district anti-corruption police. Acting on the complaint, officers provided chemically treated currency and laid a trap. Kalaiarasan was caught red-handed when the money was handed over at the office.

Police said Kalaiarasan is from Suramangalam in Salem district. A search was also conducted at his residence late at night, during which important documents were seized.
