Chennai: A complaint has been raised that six states, including Tamil Nadu, have remained silent on implementing a centrally funded scheme to issue unique ID cards for properties.
The Union government has announced a special programme to digitise property records nationwide. As part of the effort, village-wise digital maps are being prepared and ownership document details are being moved to digital formats.
Based on these records, work has begun to assign each property a unique number and issue a dedicated ID card. However, the rollout is said to be affected in some places due to inadequate cooperation from state governments.
A revenue department official said digital mapping has been completed for 3.30 lakh of the country’s 3.38 lakh villages. Under the digital system, property ID cards have been issued for 3.24 crore properties across 1.97 lakh villages.
States such as Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Goa and Uttarakhand are in the final stages of issuing the cards. But the process has stalled in Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Kerala, Sikkim, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. The official noted that Tamil Nadu has digitised property documents extensively, but the ID card rollout has not begun, and future implementation will depend on the new government’s decision.
