Former Anna University Vice Chancellor Balagurusamy has urged the Tamil Nadu government to implement the 10% reservation for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) in education and government employment.
In a letter addressed to Chief Minister Vijay, he noted that the law providing a 10% quota for economically weaker sections has been in place for several years. He said the measure would benefit people in the general category who do not fall under existing reservation limits, and added that the Union government has defined eligibility criteria for the EWS quota.
He pointed out that around 20 states, including Kerala, have already implemented the EWS reservation. He described it as surprising that Tamil Nadu, often seen as a leading state in social justice, has not adopted the policy so far.
Balagurusamy argued that social justice should address both social and economic inequality, and said excluding economically disadvantaged people would be inappropriate. He also alleged that some leaders linked to caste-based politics oppose economic reservation for vote-bank reasons, calling it unfortunate.
He appealed to the state to take steps to implement the 10% EWS quota, stating that it could play an important role in reducing social disparities.
