Tamil Nadu has seen a rise in women-led startups, with the latest figures showing women heading more recognised startups than men in the state.
Governments at the Centre and in the state have been offering multiple forms of support to encourage young innovators to launch startups. As a result, many graduates are increasingly choosing entrepreneurship over conventional employment.
To obtain official startup recognition, firms must register with the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) under the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry. In Tamil Nadu, StartupTN facilitates support such as funding assistance, investment opportunities and market access for startups.
At present, Tamil Nadu has a total of 15,037 startups. Of these, 7,572 are led by women and 7,465 by men—meaning women lead 107 more startups than men.
District-wise, Chennai leads with 5,134 startups, followed by Coimbatore (2,011) and Kancheepuram (1,318). The remaining top 10 districts are Tiruvallur (916), Chengalpattu (815), Madurai (497), Tiruchirappalli (446), Salem (403), Erode (350) and Krishnagiri (239).
