Coimbatore Corporation’s control room maintenance has come under scrutiny after allegations that work worth Rs 5.75 crore per year was awarded for three years without calling for tenders.
The control room was set up in 2024 at the R.S. Puram Corporation Kalaignar Arangam campus at a cost of Rs 1.5 crore, to support tasks such as property tax collection follow-ups and monitoring solid waste management operations.
According to the complaint, 80 contract workers—40 in the office and 40 in the field—are engaged for activities including reminding residents about tax payments and tracking waste-management vehicles using GPS technology.
The maintenance and staffing are said to have been handled by Reliant Global Green Energy and Co, with the annual allocation pegged at Rs 5.75 crore. Officials noted that tenders are mandatory for works above Rs 5 lakh, while only emergency situations allow no-tender allocations up to Rs 50 lakh, and alleged the provision was misused.
When asked, Corporation Commissioner Ravi Teja said the matter would be fully investigated and appropriate action would be taken.
