Chennai: Expelled AMMK MLA from Mannargudi, Kamaraj, has claimed that the party is “in his hands” and said he would soon convene the party’s general council to prove it.
In the recently concluded Tamil Nadu Assembly election, the AMMK led by T.T.V. Dinakaran was part of the AIADMK-led alliance. The party contested 11 constituencies and won only one seat — Mannargudi in Tiruvarur district — where Kamaraj emerged victorious.
After the election, when the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) won more seats and moved to form the government, Kamaraj publicly extended support to TVK. AMMK leadership said this was done without Dinakaran’s approval, and Dinakaran alleged that TVK had “bought” the party’s MLA.
Following this, AMMK submitted a letter to Speaker Prabhakar seeking Kamaraj’s disqualification as an MLA for defying party directions. In a television interview, Kamaraj argued that the party belongs to whoever has the majority of MLAs, and said the Speaker would announce developments. He also claimed he and others had conducted the last AMMK general council meeting and questioned whether a leader who cannot convene such a meeting can run the party.
Kamaraj’s remarks have reportedly caused shock within AMMK and among Dinakaran’s supporters.
