The CBI has completed its investigation into the Karur crowd crush that occurred during an election campaign by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay last year, in which 41 people died.
Following the incident, the Supreme Court ordered a CBI probe and appointed a three-member oversight panel headed by retired Supreme Court judge Ajay Rastogi to monitor the investigation. The agency has been submitting monthly status updates to the panel.
As part of the probe, the CBI questioned several individuals in Delhi, including Vijay, TVK functionaries and former DMK minister Senthil Balaji, according to the report.
The final report has now been prepared and is expected to be submitted to Justice Rastogi this week. The panel—Justice Rastogi and two senior IPS officers—is likely to review the report and seek clarifications from the CBI before finalising the draft.
After this process, the final report is expected to be filed in the Supreme Court. Once the court grants approval, the CBI is expected to file a chargesheet in court, bringing the politically debated case closer to a conclusion.
