Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday cautioned government officials against making citizens “run from pillar to post”, and said public service must be centred on helping people access their lawful rights.
Speaking after inaugurating an Income Tax Department office building at Nariman Point in Mumbai, she said that while the IRS is part of the administrative system, experience helps officials better understand the problems faced by the public.
Sitharaman also flagged what she described as a laid-back approach in government departments, warning that it not only inconveniences citizens but can lead to poor management of public assets.
She said such weak administration can leave public property vulnerable to encroachment. Emphasising integrity in public service, she added that officials should use their authority responsibly—without violating rules or favouring anyone—so that people do not struggle to obtain benefits and entitlements due to them under the law.
