An explosion at an illegal fireworks-making site near Sivakasi in Virudhunagar district killed two workers on Saturday, officials said.
The incident occurred at Sengamalapatti, where fireworks were reportedly being manufactured unlawfully. Following the blast, workers were trapped at the spot, prompting fire and rescue teams and police to rush to the area.
Two bodies were recovered, and efforts are under way to establish the identities of the deceased. Another worker who sustained serious injuries has been admitted to a hospital for treatment.
Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the explosion and the circumstances under which the unit was operating.
In a separate incident, a fire broke out at a sparkler company in Kongalapuram near Sivakasi. Police are examining whether the unit was functioning illegally and what triggered the fire.
