Cathay Pacific’s Chennai–Hong Kong services were cancelled on Saturday following a typhoon warning issued in Hong Kong, causing hardship for international passengers at Chennai airport.
According to airport sources, a Cathay Pacific aircraft carrying 217 passengers arrived at Chennai International Airport at 11:50 pm on Friday. The return service was scheduled to depart at 12:50 am with 220 passengers.
However, with Hong Kong’s weather agency warning of the possible impact of Typhoon “Naul”, the airline cancelled the flight as a safety measure. Passengers who had planned to travel from Chennai to Hong Kong were left waiting as a result.
The Cathay Pacific flight scheduled to arrive in Chennai from Hong Kong on Saturday was also cancelled due to the same alert. Many travellers were using the Chennai–Hong Kong connection to continue onward to cities including London, Tokyo, Melbourne and Seoul.
Airport officials said the service is expected to resume once the typhoon threat eases, and that the flight may depart from Chennai to Hong Kong early tomorrow.
