The Madras High Court on Monday directed the Director General of Police (DGP), Tamil Nadu, to provide armed police protection to retired IAS officer U. Sagayam.
Sagayam, who has served as District Collector in Namakkal and Madurai and held senior posts in various state departments, had earlier worked as a court-appointed legal commissioner. In that role, he brought to light large-scale irregularities linked to granite quarries.
In his petition, Sagayam said he faced a threat to his life and was unable to appear in court in person for hearings. During the hearing on July 27, his counsel submitted that the security earlier provided to him had been withdrawn without any prior notice.
Police informed the court that his request for protection was under consideration by a review committee. After hearing both sides, the judge ordered the DGP to ensure armed police security for Sagayam and closed the case.
