India’s Mirabai Chanu won the gold medal in the women’s 48kg weightlifting event at the Commonwealth competition underway in Glasgow, Scotland.

Chanu topped the field with a combined lift of 190kg, posting 85kg in snatch and 105kg in clean and jerk. Nigeria’s Nyang took silver, while Malaysia’s Henry secured bronze.

Her 105kg effort in clean and jerk also earned her a world record for the highest lift in that segment, marking a historic milestone in her career.

The medal is India’s second in weightlifting at the 2026 Commonwealth series, following Rishikanta Singh’s silver in the men’s 60kg category. Overall, India has three medals and stands seventh on the medal table, led by Australia, England, Nigeria and Scotland.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Chanu in a post on X, noting that this is her fourth Commonwealth medal and praising her as an inspiration to Indians.
