India opened its gold-medal account at the 2026 Commonwealth Games through weightlifting, with Mirabai Chanu delivering the country’s first top podium finish.

The women’s weightlifting events were held on Sunday, where Chanu competed in the 48kg category. She produced a strong performance across both lifts.

In the snatch and clean & jerk rounds, Chanu lifted 85kg and 105kg respectively, finishing with a combined total of 190kg to secure the gold medal.

The result marked India’s first gold of the Games, setting an early highlight for the contingent in the competition.
