Indian weightlifter Rishikantha Singh won the silver medal in the men’s 60kg category at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, giving India its first medal of the ongoing event.
The Commonwealth Games began on July 23 and will run until August 2. More than 3,000 athletes from 74 countries, including India, are competing across disciplines.
Rishikantha Singh, who hails from Manipur, started strongly and was in the lead early in the contest, raising expectations of a gold. However, he failed in his final two attempts, limiting his best lift to 143 kg.
He finished with a total of 264 kg, combining 121 kg and 143 kg, to secure silver. Malaysia’s Muhammad Aniq Kasdan won gold with 273 kg, while Kenya’s Joshua Amunga took bronze with 260 kg.
The medal is India’s first at these Commonwealth Games, excluding the Para Commonwealth competition.
