Opposition leader and DMK Youth Wing secretary Udhayanidhi on Monday alleged that the TVK government’s “full-time job” was to buy MLAs, accusing it of prioritising political manoeuvring over governance.

His remarks came after Vilathikulam DMK MLA Markandeyan was arrested in a case filed over alleged defamatory remarks about the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister. Markandeyan has been lodged in Palayamkottai prison.

Udhayanidhi visited the prison and met Markandeyan in person. Speaking to reporters later, he said the government was driven by a desire for revenge and claimed that even TVK party functionaries were raising various complaints.

He further alleged that the government was not acting on those complaints, and instead was focused on targeting the DMK and attempting to lure legislators, including AIADMK MLAs, through inducements.

The government has not responded to the allegations in the report.
