A protest in Delhi against an alleged NEET question paper leak turned violent after remaining largely peaceful for about 20 days, according to Delhi Police. The agitation was organised by a group named “Karappanpoochi Janata Party”, and its leader Abhijit Deepke allegedly urged participants to march towards Parliament.
Police said thousands began moving towards Parliament at the same time, leading to clashes when officers tried to stop them. During the violence, protesters allegedly assaulted police personnel and damaged vehicles, leaving more than 100 police personnel injured.
A report submitted to the government by Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar detailed the investigation into 2,873 people arrested for attacking police and vandalism. Of them, 989 were found to have prior involvement in serious offences.
Among the 989, police said 101 had pending murder cases, 62 faced attempted murder charges, 284 were linked to robbery and theft cases, and 229 had cases under the Arms Act. The list also included 19 with kidnapping cases, six linked to POCSO cases, 61 with registered rape cases, and 67 involved in narcotics trafficking.
Delhi Police said their probe indicated that people with such criminal backgrounds were among those involved in the march-related violence. Reports also suggested that further action could continue against those with criminal records, while cases against students may be withdrawn.
