A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Japan on Tuesday, with tremors reported across the country. The epicentre was near Kumamoto on the southern main island of Kyushu, according to local reports.
Japan’s Meteorological Agency said a tsunami advisory was issued following the quake. The earthquake occurred at a depth of about 10 km below sea level.
As of the latest updates, there was no official information on damage or casualties. Authorities said assessments were under way to understand the impact.
Japan’s Prime Minister’s Office instructed officials to quickly evaluate the situation and prioritise human life. The government also directed disaster response teams to act with full urgency.
Emergency earthquake alerts were issued for multiple prefectures in Kyushu, including Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Fukuoka, Saga, Oita and Miyazaki.
