A notice displayed at the Manamadurai taluk office in Sivaganga district has attracted attention for its blunt message: visitors should come only with their petitions and not with money.
The step comes amid continuing complaints that some officials and staff at taluk offices demand bribes for services such as patta transfer, issuing certificates and land survey work, along with frequent movement of intermediaries.
According to the report, Manamadurai Tahsildar Krishnakumar, who has recently taken charge, introduced the measure to improve transparency, reduce broker influence and discourage people from bringing large amounts of cash into the office.
The notice has been pasted on the office’s information boards and along the compound walls. Two staff members are also said to question visitors on why they have come and whether they are carrying money before allowing them inside. Many members of the public have welcomed the initiative.
