Thousands of protesters in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoJK) began marching from Rawalakot towards Muzaffarabad on July 27, as a 52-day agitation intensified, according to reports.
The protests, which have been continuing since last month, are linked to issues including legislative reservation for refugees and rising prices. The report said several people have died during the course of the agitation.
Elections were held in the region on July 27, with incidents of violence and alleged irregularities reported in multiple places.
The movement is being led by the Awami Action Committee (JAAC), which had set conditions including withdrawal of cases filed against protesters and acceptance of its demands. With no progress by midday and talks with officials failing, the group proceeded with the march.
Security personnel attempted to stop the procession, leading to tension in the area, the report added.
