DMK leader and Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin met Vilathikulam MLA Markandeyan at the Tirunelveli prison on Sunday and enquired about his well-being.

Markandeyan was arrested on July 20 in a case alleging defamatory remarks and threatening speech against Chief Minister Vijay, and has been lodged in the Tirunelveli jail.

Udhayanidhi arrived at the prison at 12:38 pm along with former DMK ministers Anita Radhakrishnan and Geetha Jeevan, met the MLA, and left around 1:05 pm.

Later, speaking to reporters at a hotel in KTC Nagar, Udhayanidhi said Markandeyan was “courageous” in jail and that the party would take legal steps to bring him out on bail.

He also accused the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government of acting out of vendetta, alleging it was not acting on complaints made by its own party members in places including Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli, and claimed the government was focused on luring AIADMK MLAs to its side by offering “sofas.”
