New Delhi: Union Minister Jitendra Singh on Tuesday said that police did not open fire during the Delhi protest and that only tear gas was used.
Responding in Parliament to opposition allegations that the police exceeded limits and carried out attacks during the protest, the minister reiterated that there was no gunfire. He said the point had been clarified repeatedly.
Singh also stated that the authority to issue an order for firing rests with a judge, not with ministers.
Taking aim at the Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Singh said it was shocking that language not in keeping with parliamentary tradition was used, and criticised remarks that, he said, amounted to calling the country’s youth “fools.”
