India has seen a sharp rise in the number of high-income individual taxpayers, according to data shared by the Union Finance Ministry.
Replying in writing to a question in Parliament, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said the count of individuals reporting annual income of at least Rs 100 crore has grown by over 300% since 2021.
As per the figures, 576 individuals reported income of Rs 100 crore or more in 2025-26. The number stood at 415 in 2024-25, while it was 142 in 2021-22.
The year-wise trend showed an increase to 301 in 2022-23, followed by a dip to 284 in 2023-24, before rising again to 415 in 2024-25 and further to 576 in 2025-26.
The minister also stated that the government does not maintain data on the wealth of billionaires. Separately, the reply noted that 24.82 crore people moved out of poverty between 2013-14 and 2022-23.
