The Lok Sabha on July 29 passed the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026 through a voice vote.
The Centre decided to amend the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024 after taking the NEET undergraduate medical entrance exam question paper leak issue seriously. The Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha amid strong protests from opposition parties.
According to the proposed changes, those involved in leaking question papers for government competitive examinations could face penalties of up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to Rs 50 lakh.
While initial disruptions prevented a discussion, the opposition later agreed to debate the Bill. Union Minister of State Jitendra Singh introduced it, and the debate continued late into the night and resumed on July 29.
After the discussion, the House cleared the Bill by voice vote and adjourned the Lok Sabha until the next morning. The government is expected to table the Bill in the Rajya Sabha soon.
