Chennai: Revenue Minister Sengottaiyan on Monday said Tamil Nadu will undertake disaster management-related works worth Rs 3,000 crore, in line with commitments made in the party’s election manifesto.
He was speaking after inaugurating a training workshop on heat risk management organised by the state’s newly launched disaster management institute. The minister said climate change is leading to reduced rainfall and increased heat intensity, making it necessary to develop measures to mitigate the impact.
As part of this effort, the Tamil Nadu government has prepared a heatwave action plan for the first time. Based on the plan, multiple departments will frame and implement strategies to manage heat-related risks.
The minister said areas likely to face higher heat levels have been identified down to the panchayat level, including remote hamlets, and preventive steps are being planned accordingly.
He added that Chief Minister Vijay has directed officials to draw up disaster management programmes, including an allocation of Rs 50 crore for each district for disaster-related works. Separately, the government has earmarked Rs 55 crore to set up borewells with rainwater harvesting facilities in locations where underground passages exist in Chennai.
