The Madras High Court has ordered a ban on registering 213 acres of land said to belong to Visveswara Swamy Temple in Nallur village, Tiruppur district.
The dispute arose after the temple’s executive officer wrote to the Tiruppur sub-registrar, asking that documents relating to the temple’s 218.41 acres should not be registered. Tiruppur resident Shanmugasundaram challenged this communication before the High Court.
In 2024, a single judge set aside the executive officer’s letter and permitted registration of Shanmugasundaram’s land. The temple administration filed an appeal in 2025 against that order.
Hearing the appeal, a division bench comprising Justices G. Jayachandran and N. Mala accepted the temple’s contention that the single judge should not have annulled the letter in its entirety. The bench held the executive officer’s letter to be legally valid and directed that registration of 213 acres of the temple land must not be allowed.
The court also permitted the temple administration to take steps to file a civil suit to recover the remaining 5 acres of land.
