Chennai: July and August are typically considered an off-season for tourism in Tamil Nadu, as the southwest monsoon and the reopening of schools and colleges usually reduce leisure travel.
This year, however, the pattern has shifted. With multiple long weekends expected in August, tourists are showing renewed interest in visiting major destinations across the state.
Officials said advance reservations are climbing sharply at Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) properties as well as private premium resorts.
TTDC reported that rooms are filling up quickly at government-run hotels and restaurants in Ooty, Kodaikanal, Yercaud, Courtallam, Yelagiri and Mamallapuram.
According to TTDC officials, even though the monsoon has been disappointing, many families are planning getaways to make use of the holiday stretch around Independence Day, driving the surge in bookings.
